Autobiography
I
am Gary Poyau. I was born under the sign of the Aries
constellation. I am often asked the reason of choosing
art and more than often my answer is that I have not
chosen to be an artist as much as I was found by the
muse herself.
I started painting at an early age. I cannot remember
exactly at what age I began, but I always have the impression
it was something I was born with. I guess, somehow,
eventually, my senses became influenced by the beauty
and the energetic environment where I grew up. Such
beauty, I found, was dynamic and fickle.
I often say that I have never seen a sunset, mountain,
a sea, a river twice. Every time I gaze upon a scenery,
it was always something new, something which I have
never seen before. This ephemeral aspect of nature I
strived to capture in my work for further contemplation
later. And there lies my biggest challenge: my never
ending search to capture every changing moment and yet
to control the perception that I might miss out on a
life changing event if I did not find a way to decode
the language of this powerful wonder all around me.
Such desires and emotions, such search for constant
improvement motivated me to apply to Art school. I entered
Ecole des Beaux Arts, one of the most important Art
schools in my country. The teaching there was academic,
rigorous and traditional. Yet, I was able to explore
a variety of other styles and techniques and experiment
quite a bit before settling on Impressionism. After
School, I participated in a number of exhibits in Haiti
as well as in the United States.
In closing, I believe that to be an artist, it is more
than a choice, it is a way of living. Paolo Veronese
once said that " beauty is in the eye of the beholder
and as a man thinketh in his heart, so is the transfer
of that thought to the canvas of Life."
